Yesterday Darren Henry MP Broxtowe spoke directly with Rob McDonough, Chief Executive of East Midlands Education Trust (EMET).
Darren was reassured by Rob that the EMET are not seeking to close Kimberley Leisure Centre. EMET would like to revise the present agreement with Broxtowe Borough Council so that during the school day they can have improved access for their pupils.
Broxtowe MP, Darren Henry, said: “I keenly support efforts to secure the future of Kimberley Leisure Centre and urge Broxtowe Borough Council to engage in negotiations with the EMET accordingly. In addition to the EMET pupils, all generations benefit greatly from these leisure facilities in Kimberley including: young children learning to swim, teenagers enjoying the roller disco, adults in the Gym and the really popular aqua fit classes. Post-coronavirus more than ever, we will need this place for our fitness and well-being.”
Kimberley Borough Councillor, Shane Easom, said: “Our leisure centre is a well-used and much loved part of our community. Recent speculation by Labour activists has caused real concern that we are about to lose our leisure centre but, having spoken with the EMET, which is responsible for seven Kimberley schools, I know this isn’t their intention and it is clear that they wish to see a continuation of leisure facilities at the centre. I am also very concerned for the staff who already face an uncertain future with the current lockdown measures meaning the centre has been closed since 23rd March and we need to give a clear message to the centres customers that the centre has a long-term future.”
Kimberley Borough Councillor, Mel Crow, added “it’s time for sensible dialogue and not political posturing - Broxtowe Council must do everything possible to maintain and improve services at Kimberley Leisure Centre in Partnership with the EMET.”
