This week there was some potentially confusing information issued regarding the future of Beeston Farmer’s Market. I have sought urgent clarification from Broxtowe Borough Council and they have issued me with the following statement:
‘We regret the distress that has been caused by the promotion of misinformation that has alleged the provision of markets in the Square will be discontinued, and want to reassure residents that the monthly market will be continuing on a monthly basis in Beeston Square as we know our residents enjoy visiting the market.
Unfortunately, the Council has received numerous complaints from both traders and shop keepers about previous operational arrangements which it has been unable to resolve privately. We are unable to discuss these publicly, but as a Council must take all complaints seriously.
Without the significant improvement needed, we have decided a change of management was relevant and best for the future of the market and stall holders of Beeston.
As Nottingham City Council have the statutory right to run a farmers market, we will be renaming the market moving forward, but have a legal right to hold markets in Beeston.
The planned market for this weekend will still be going ahead on Saturday 20 January, 8am-2pm, stall holders have been contacted and invited to have a stall. Moving forward if new traders would like to attend please contact markets@broxtowe.gov.uk for further information.
Broxtowe businesses are vital to the Borough and we want to carry on supporting our businesses and encouraging residents to shop local.’
