Today the Prime Minister announced he is not going ahead with future plans for HS2. However, that money will instead be spent, in its entirety, on transport and infrastructure. The graphic shows the huge amount of projects that will be covered and I am delighted to see many of them are in the Midlands.
Plans are still being released but we do already know that Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire will be given a new Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement of £1.5 billion – an average of almost £1000 per person. We have new major investment coming with the Midlands Rail Hub that could increase services between Beeston and Birmingham by 50%. Bus fares will remain capped at £2!
A Midlands Road Fund is being launched worth nearly £650 million for new roads and £2.2 billion is being committed to fixing potholes in the Midlands to ensure our existing roads are up to scratch.
My priority with HS2 was ensuring we have greater connectivity and transport infrastructure in the East Midlands and for my constituents in Broxtowe. There are many things in this new package that will move us in this direction and ensure better connectivity for our future generations. I will speak with all appropriate Ministers and local leaders to make sure that Broxtowe gets its fair share and ensure the new announcement today has a positive impact on the day to day lives of my constituents.
